While the usual events at Crescent Rock Beach include sunbathing, skinny-dipping, communing with nature and just simply relaxing, there are some occasions organized by SUN and other naturist/nudist groups that you may wish to attend during 2008.  MAKE SURE YOU CIRCLE THESE IMPORTANT DAYS ON YOUR CALENDAR!

SUN's Bald Eagle Count - May 4
The secluded shores of Crescent Rock Beach attracts hundreds of Bald Eagles every spring when the bullheads are breeding under the rocks lining the shore.  Great Blue Herons catch these fish and the eagles then fly in attempting to steal their meals, resulting in noisy aerial combat between these two predators.  The Bald Eagles perched on the sand bars, rocky shore and trees of the Ocean Park bluff will be counted along the entire 6 km. stretch of Crescent Rock Beach between Crescent Beach and White Rock on Sunday, May 4th as a way to gauge the health of their populations from year to year.  If you wish to be part of this environmental study, meet with SUN members by 9 a.m at the Crescent Rock boulder just south of the "101 Steps" metal staircase at the west end of 24th Ave. in Surrey.

World Oceans Day - June 8
CANCELLED.  After ignoring two previous SUN requests to register for this event, the WOD organizing committee, consisting of members from Friends of Semiahmoo Bay Society and the City of Surrey finally revealed they were excluding SUN a week before the festivities. Read the May Rock Report in the News section for more information on this 'clothes-minded' decision.

International Nude Recreation Week
July 6 to 13
Plan your summer holidays to coincide with the Naturist Society's International Nude Recreation Week and spend your time textile-free, enjoying yourself as naturally as can be.

Crescent Rock Beach Day - July 6
(Rain Date - July 20)
International Nude Recreation Week festivities in Surrey will kick off with the 2nd annual Crescent Rock Beach Day held on Sunday, July 6th.  There will be a mass-mooning of the Amtrak passenger train at 10:30 a.m under the banner of "BNSF - Butt Out of the Beach". SUN hopes to raise awareness of this naturist recreational area and the concept of moving this historically dangerous railway from the ocean and landslide-prone bluff to a safer inland route, turning the rail bed into a nature trail stretching across the shores of Boundary Bay from the Peace Arch to Tsawwassen. Be at the Crescent Rock boulder by 10 o'clock if you want to be part of this yearly protest which will be held until these antiquated tracks are finally closed.  After this cheeky spectacle, the rest of the day will be spent enjoying Crescent Rock Beach as Surrey's naturist shoreline for people from across the Fraser Valley.  Bring your kites, skim boards, musical instruments, body paint, sand castle tools and a hearty lunch to enjoy this special day to its fullest.  Please note that the BNSF protest will be held rain or shine and if the weather is not warm and sunny, C.R.B. Day will be rescheduled to July 20th.

Wreck Beach Day - July 12
(Rain Date - July 26)
The 27th annual Wreck Beach Day will be held on Saturday, July 12 at Point Gray in Vancouver to wrap up International Nude Recreation Week.  Folks will be able to win trophies and ribbons for sandcastles, kite flying, body painting and the annual nude art show.  Team captains or single individuals for the sandcastle competition must be nude.  Registration is free at the bottom of Trail #6 and starts at 9 a.m.  Judging of castles, depending on winds and waves, will begin approximately at 3 p.m.  Cold, cloudy, or rainy weather will see this event postponed to July 26.  Visit the WBPS website at www.wreckbeach.org for more details on this event.

Wreck Beach Bare Buns Fun Run - Aug 17
The Wreck Beach Bare Buns Fun Run is part of the 8th annual "Buns-across-the-Border" celebration of naturism.  Registration opens at 9:00 a.m. at the bottom of Trail #6 and the run goes at 11:30 a.m. sharp rain or shine.  Register on-line at registrar@barebuns.ca or visit the WBPS website for additional information.

Polar "Bare" Plunge - January 1, 2009
BRRR...ring in the "Nude" Year with SUN and Skinnydipper Services Inc. when we hold the 3rd annual Polar "Bare" Plunge charity swim at Crescent Rock Beach on Jan. 1st, 2009, at 11 a.m. in the icy waters directly in front of the giant Crescent Rock boulder just south of Crescent Beach. Entry is free, but we ask supporters and spectators to bring cash donations for the War Amps PLAYSAFE and CHAMPS childhood amputee programs. Prizes will be given out for the youngest and oldest competitors, longest swim, and of course, best costume. Your one-button bathing suit is the proper attire, but body paint and limited clothing are always appreciated.  Please note that the time for this swim has been changed because of the tide heights and to not interfere with the textiled New Year's Day swims being held in White Rock at 12 noon and English Bay at 2:30 p.m.  Registration for the Polar Bare Plunge starts at 10 a.m. and a change shelter along with hot beverages will be provided for your comfort.

SUN Days
For those sun worshippers out there who can't get enough of that bright ball of fire in the sky, the following calendar dates will be of importance to you.  Spring equinox is on Thursday, March 19th at 9:48 p.m., summer solstice is on Friday, June 20th at 3:59 p.m., and the autumn equinox is on Monday, September 22nd at 7:44 a.m.  If the weather co-operates these might be good days to call in sick and visit a nude beach to celebrate these special celestial events by soaking up the sun's rays with other naturists.  For those wishing to mark the winter solstice, it occurs on Saturday, Dec. 20 at 4:05 p.m.

Crescent Rock Beach patrols
SUN asks everyone who comes to Crescent Rock Beach to work together to keep the shoreline free of litter and debris. There are no scheduled work crews at this time as we trust when you leave the beach you'll take your own garbage plus any other discarded items you may find.  Please report any pollution (RAPP Line @ 1-877-952-7277), safety problems with the BNSF Railway (Transport Canada, New West. @ 604-666-0011), or harassment of wildlife (Surrey Conservation Office @ 604-582-5250) to SUN and the proper authorities.  This includes low-flying ultra-light aircraft deliberately targeting eagles, herons and flocks of ducks on the shoreline.  If you witness this activity try to record it with video and note the registration numbers printed on the offending aircraft wings for identification.  SUN would like ground these pilots and put an end to this illegal practice.
